Things to avoid on a Keto Diet

Foods, Drinks and Habits to avoid on a Ketogenic Lifestyle

Bad Keto

One of the main aims of a Ketogenic Diet is to sustain your body in the state of Ketosis, for as long as possible. This means being very cautious of particular Foods, Drinks and habits that are likely to "kick you out of Ketosis".

Foods to avoid:

  • ALL Grains - Wholemeal, Quinoa, Rice, Wheat etc
  • ALL Legumes - Beans, Lentils, Chickpeas etc
  • MOST Fruits - Apples, Bananas, any fruits high in Fructose
  • Soy - Soybean, Soy Milk, Tofu, Soy Sauce etc
  • Dried Fruits - Raisins, Dates, Apricots etc
  • Starchy Vegetables - Potatoes, Yams, Parsnips, Squashes etc
  • Refined Oils - Vegetable Oil, Sunflower, Corn, Sesame etc
  • OTHERS - Crisps, Chocolate, Sweets, Biscuits etc

The above are very high in Carbs, for which will likely result in the body switching metabolism to converting Carbs (Glucose) into Energy, not Fats.

Drinks to avoid:

  • Carbonated Sodas - mainly all the full Sugar fizzy drinks
  • SOME Alcohols - Beer, sweet Wines, sweet spirits, Cider etc
  • Fruit Juices
  • Milk - Cow's Milk and Milkshakes

Above listed items are generally high in Sugar content, so these are a definite NO NO.

Other Food and Drinks to avoid:

  • Margarine
  • Low-Fat products
  • MSG
  • Sweeteners - Maltodextrin, Dextrose, Fructose

Some of the items listed above are more to do with Health reasons, as well as maintaining a continuous state of Ketosis... and there are some that can cause harm to your inner Health.

Habits to avoid:

  • Stress
  • Lack of Sleep
  • Cheat Days
  • Processed Foods

Did you know that frequent stress can raise Cortisol hormones, in which instigates Insulin release and potentially kick you out of Ketosis? Lack of Sleep is can also contribute to elevated Cortisol levels, resulting in intense cravings and poor decision-making.
I personally do not advocate Cheat Days, however I have seen particular uses (requiring a high level of discipline and a very active Exercise routine), and in general, stay away from processed junk foods that contain a cocktail of hidden carbs, sugars and preservatives.
